The COVID-19 pandemic and resultant social lockdowns are creating disproportionate burdens for women and girls. Women make up almost 70% of the healthcare workforce, largely on the frontlines of care, exposing them to a greater risk of infection. At the same time, women face decreased access to reproductive and maternal health care, increased domestic care burdens and uncertain or fewer economic opportunities. There is also an indication of escalating domestic violence against women and girls, as they are forced to remain at home at a time of increased household financial stress and social isolation. GEH has hand selected and developed evidence-based measures for surveys on COVID-19 and Gender, including topics such as domestic violence, digital literacy and social support. These measures are being tested in several country contexts, from India, Kenya and Jordan to the United States, by researchers and implementers globally. The Center is also compiling available literature on COVID-19 and Gender, and plans to analyze big data sources to develop algorithms to identify COVID-19 concerns, effects, and desired supports in real time, for use across diverse national and subnational contexts.
