California Violence Experiences Survey ( CalVEX )

Situation or Background
Violence remains at epidemic proportions in the U.S., including gender-based violence (partner
violence, sexual harassment and assault, exploitation), community violence and policing,
discrimination and firearm-related violence.

Our Goal or What We’re Doing
We are partnering with key experts and stakeholders from the fields of safety, health and wellness
across the state of California and nationally to undertake state-wide surveillance of violence
across the lifespan, and use of research and surveillance to guide prevention programming for the
state.

Approach or Methodology
From our representative, semi-annual state-wide surveys, we are providing data to better
understand the state of and trends of these issues as well as mental health outcomes and risk and
protective factors. We also share our de-identified dataset for public use so that others can explore
their own research questions.

Impact and What We’re Learning
So far, we have been able to delve into the financial costs of intimate partner violence in the state,
look at the violence and mental health experiences of Asian Californians and build upon what
might not have been captured in our cross-sectional surveys by conducting qualitative interviews
with service providers who work with foreign-born Californians. With our comprehensive data, we
can work with our partners to develop policy and practice guidance in order to address violence in
California.
